To All Veterans Globally: A Message of Honor and Gratitude
November 11th, 2024
Greetings in the Name of יהוה (YHWH) שלום עליכם (Shalom Aleichem),
As we reflect upon the sacrifices of those who have served, we find ourselves indebted to you, the veterans of the world, who have stood in defense of freedom, justice, and peace for all. Scriptures remind us, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which יהוה (YHWH) your God gives you” (Exodus 20:12). In honoring our fathers and mothers, we also honor you — those who have bravely safeguarded communities and nations.
In every land and culture, veterans bear a sacred responsibility and endure sacrifices that many will never fully grasp. Yet today, many veterans face financial hardships, health challenges, and a lack of essential support. These are the social determinants that often go unmet, leaving our honored veterans and their families vulnerable. To address this, I call upon global leaders in both the church and state to unite in a renewed commitment to uplift, support, and provide for veterans holistically.
Key Areas of Support for Veterans and Their Families
1. Economic Stability
Financial stability is critical for all who have given so much in service. As it is written: “If your brother becomes poor, and his hand cannot support him, you shall uphold him” (Leviticus 25:35). We must ensure that veterans have access to financial support, housing security, and assistance that provides stability and dignity.
2. Health and Well-Being
The wounds of service — both visible and hidden — demand comprehensive care. Inspired by the compassion of the Good Samaritan, we are called to prioritize veterans’ physical, mental, and spiritual health, bringing healing to all who need it (Luke 10:33–34).
3. Education and Employment Opportunities
Veterans’ skills, dedication, and resilience are valuable to every community. Proverbs tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Let us open educational and vocational doors for veterans, restoring purpose and prosperity through training, scholarships, and career opportunities.
4. Social and Community Support
Veterans deserve communities that honor their service, encourage connections, and address the effects of isolation. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1). Together, we must establish networks of support and camaraderie, embracing veterans within our congregations and communities.
A Global Commitment of Support
With reverence, I call upon the global body to implement a comprehensive offering package for veterans and their families that includes:
• Financial assistance, housing support, and mortgage relief.
• Dedicated healthcare access and mental health resources.
• Education programs, vocational training, and career placement.
• Social support networks, mentoring, and respite services within communities.
In closing, we are reminded of Micah’s call to “walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8) by seeking justice, mercy, and humility. May we strive to serve you, our veterans, with the compassion and gratitude you so rightfully deserve.
May this message reach each veteran with honor, respect, and the deepest appreciation.
With the love of יהוה (YHWH) and the אהבת משיח (Love of Messiah),
EF, Rav
